It was loud, I’ll give them that. But making people wait an hour before they come out onto stage when all the gear is set up and has been ready to play the whole fucking time? That’s just pretentious shit. I guess they figured everyone waited 16 years for them to get together and play, what’s another hour. Obviously they didn’t give a shit and they believed they were owed the $52 ticket after doing nothing for so long. And to all you hipsters in the crowd headbanging and throwing up your hands with the sign of the horns like MBV was some death metal band, it’s more effective when you TAKE THE FUCKING EAR PLUGS OUT OF YOU EARS YOU PUSSY HIPSTER FUCKS. Watta is louder with a single guitar than all of MBV could hope to be.

Imaginary Icons Vivian Girls Awesome Color Cake Shop 9-19-08

I’ve never been against iPods as many of my friends would tell you. I’m more against headphones in general. I believe music should be played loudly out loud so the neighbors can listen too. Why not spread the joy of Slayer to the entire Bronx? I don’t own an iPod and I don’t know much about new TV shows, which makes me a luddite, as Tigs calls me, or a Lufid, as I called myself, thinking that was the word for Luddite after my retired cop sociology teacher called me one 4 years ago. I misheard him, I have bad eardrums. But since Tigs has been recording a lot of shows, I wanted to do one on my own so I borrowed his iPod and mic attachment and went to the Imaginary Icons, Vivian Girls and Awesome Color at the Cake Shop last Friday night.

Here we go. The thing only works if you have the backlight turned off because when the mic is going it wont turn off. So I had to use my cellphone light to see what I was doing (who’s a luddite now, bitches?). So I’m juggling an iPod and a cellphone throughout the show. That wasn’t too bad. The bad part was this: the mic attachement has a red light that glows to let you know its recording. Seemingly nice feature. Not for me. Cake Shop isn’t very big and the audience area is very narrow. When the Vivian Girls got on, it was more packed than I’ve ever seen any of these Manhattan basement venue shows. (Lit, Midway, etc.) As soon as they got on, the 10 people in front of me all turned around at the exact same moment and starting staring at me. Cursed red dot! Then I realized there’s a TV set directly behind my head and they wanted to see the Vivian Girls because it was almost impossible from 10 feet and 50 people back. So I start getting a little nervous. I got a few weird looks, but nothing big. The Vivian Girls drew the biggest crowd by far. I loved their show. They have come a long way since I last saw them a year ago with King Khan. They are still fuzzy and very sweet. That’s the best way I can describe them.

Then Awesome Color came on and I wasn’t sure if I was going to record it. The main reason I came was for the Vivian Girls. So instead of fumbling with my cellphone light I decided to go upstairs, take a look at Jad Fair’s cutout art (which is on exhibition all this month at the Cake Shop- check it out) and turn the recorder on first then walk downstairs. What a stupid idea! I tried hiding the red light against my shirt, but it made the whole shirt glow. I tried to avoid eye contact, but these people were on to me. I felt like a narc. When I finally got back downstairs, I made Evelyn get in front of me so she could block some of the red. (“Please just stand in front of me.” “No, that’s weird.” “Just do it” “Do you want me to hold that thing?” “No”) You will notice the fading in and out of Derek’s insane guitar solos. That’s me dodging looks and hiding behind Evelyn’s head. At one point, these two guys kept talking and pointing at me no matter how much I used Evelyn as a shield. I was back in Middle School again. I started sweating so much I thought I would get Tigs’ iPod soaked and the screen would turn all rainbowy like an old calculator. It didn’t and the shows came out pretty good. Vivian Girls are hard to record because they have reverbed to to the max vocals and very fuzzy guitars. Awesome Color came out better.

So here it is. My first recording. My heart was overworked and my shirt was sweated through, but I got the show. And I also proved I can make it in the modern age! Sort of.

Thanks Evelyn for protecting me from the evil hipster eyes. Thanks Tigs for letting me use your stuff. You can do the next show, and the one after that and after that…

Awesome

Today is Thursday. I was sitting at work and a Monday New York Times was lying there while I was eating lunch, so I picked it up and starting roaming. A tiny picture of J. Mascis caught my eye in the Arts section. I started reading about the Fender Jazzmaster Anniversary show last weekend with Tom Verlaine, J. Mascis and Thurston Moore among others.

I slowed down at this sentence:

Songs started and ended the concert.

Hmm. Interesting way to write about a concert. The concert started with a song and ended with a song. That’s revolutionary.

I kept reading, thinking it may have been a mistake or perhaps the writer, Mr. Jon Pareles, was writing the whole thing at 4 AM, flying high on amphetemines or crack or sawdust. I let it go. It’s an interesting sentence if nothing else. It did catch my eye. So I kept reading…

I was stopped again when I finished this next paragraph:

Leading Dinosaur Jr. since the 1980s, and on his own, Mr. Mascis has united indie-rock introspection with unbridled guitar jams. On Friday his band was a full-tilt power trio, with Dave Schools (from Widespread Panic) on bass and Kyle Spence on drums. Mr. Mascis sang in a bemused drawl about being bereft and confused. But the music declared otherwise with earthy, distorted riffs — twangy roots-rock marches and choppy postpunk dissonances — leading into brash, extended solos that climbed from chiseled melodic lines to racing, spiraling, frenetic peaks.

SWR: Hello, Mr. Mascis, would you describe your songs as having an earthy feel?

JM: Yea, uh, you could say that.

SWR: Would you also describe your solos as being brash, yet chiseled, but at the same time racing, spiraling and…perhaps… yes.. perhaps even frenetic?

JM: Oh, Most definitely frenetic. I would even go so far to say that our song structres jump between a marching style roots rock with a hint of Neil Young twang and somewhat choppy postpunk dissonances. It’s really all about the dissonances dancing with the choppyness. It’s earthy, Mr Rockin.

SWR: Thanks J!

I’m done. I know my readership is small (hello tigs!) and I don’t make any money with any of my writing, but at least I can be happy I am not Jon Pareles, the god of all the music journalism gods. Keep writing, Jon. I love it.

I went to see the new Coen brothers movie Burn After Reading last weekend. I was a little unsure of it at times, but by the end I thought it was great. It came together beautifully. The last scene was the funniest. I stand up ready to leave, but the best part of the movie was far from over. “Who can kill a general in his bed. Overthrow dictators if they’re red. Fucking A Man CIA Man.” I had to wait for the credits to tell me it was the Fugs. Tigs is a big Fugs fan and he gave me a bunch of stuff, but none of it sounded like this. So I went home and listened to “CIA man,” but the only version I had was from The Fugs First Album and its nothing like the one in the movie. So I tried to find it and no luck until someone put it on Demonoid. I had to have my friend use his password just to download it. So here it is for you because I had such a hard time finding it and because not all of us have Demonoid passwords.

The version I think is from the Fugs Refuse to be Burnt Out live album from 1985.

The song is great and its perfect for the end of the movie. Here it is. Enjoy.

“ah this indeed is music- this suits me” – Walt Whitman

I spent the last four hours listening to Double Nickels on the Dime by the Minutemen with the goal of collecting all the lyrics and posting them to this site. Let me try to explain my day and how I got to this point. I got up at 9:15 with 30 minutes to get ready for work and get on the 10 bus outside my window. I spent half of that time loading my flash drive up with a different selection of music for my breaks at work. (The Urinals, Monks, and Monotonix had been on there a while) I decided to put Double Nickels on there because it’s been a month or so since I last listened to it completely. Then I had to grab a book so I grabbed Leaves of Grass by Walt Whitman because its been about year since I last read any of it. So I got on the bus and started reading Whitman without embarrassment and without restrain- because if someone looked over my shoulder Walt looks like a regular book not fruity dead white man poetry. Thanks Walt for breaking open the margins and dripping down to the next line. If not for the future of American poetry, for me who’s afraid of reading poems on a bus. I spent most of the time reading what I had previously underlined or written in the margins.

Skip ahead to lunch: Listened to Double Nickels in a boiling tiny office on crappy monitor speakers for the entire hour. An hour is not long enough to fit it all in- it’s 74 minutes long! 45 tracks! And I had to cook my Elios Pepperoni pizza so there goes 10 minutes. I was listening to “Two Beads at the End” and I wanted to find the lyrics online. Couldn’t find them. I hate when you search in google for lyrics and 5 lyric sites pop up that say minutemen lyrics two beads at the end, but when you go there, all you get is this: “this song is not in our database yet.” That’s when I decided to spend my evening with my old friends watt, hurley and d.boon.

Skip ahead to the 26 bus going back home down Allerton Ave: Reading Walt again. More “Song of Myself” Then it hits me: The Minutemen are Walt Whitman! Hold on, Hold on. Don’t run away. Give me a chance. Whitman broke down the margins on his page and pushed the words to the next line. Most poetry before him was angry and bleak. The English writers after Billy Shakes were strict and bitter. The Americans were worse because they just wanted to imitate the Brits. Here comes this MAN, capitalized because it should be, who breaks all the rules, but not in an angry way. He isn’t angry about the past or worried about the future, he just is. He is positive. He is singing without check, without restrain. And the whole thing is not very pretty to look at. The lines don’t meet at nice points, the ends don’t rhyme, but you get the sense there is a man behind it all who stands for something amazing, in the true sense of the word. This is what I see in the Minutemen.

In my music loving life, I have completely dismissed lyrics as just something that sounds nice between the real parts of the song: the guitar, bass and drum. I usually don’t even listen to most song lyrics or spend time thinking about them. Most times they are meaningless, only there to fit the music. The Minutemen are the first band for me that has changed that. They are Walt Whitman because they are not like everybody else. The scene they came out of was an angry scene. Hardcore was mostly about being pissed off and letting the world know it. D. Boon and Watt had their share of this anger too, but the songs never sound angry. They are positive songs that deal with big ideas. They are trying their best to cut down these big ideas of the world into the most basic in-the-now words. And they know it’s hard. Whitman writes about how hard it is. Whitman says: Do I contradict myself? Very well then I contradict myself, (I am large, I contain multitudes.) Watt says: I’m fucking overwhelmed!

Double Nickels is not a pretty album. It doesn’t have the nice neat structure of most songs. Blues, Rock, and Punk 99.99% of the time fit into very similar structures of verse/chorus/verse. The Minutemen don’t care about that. Their songs stop short. Some songs have 5 lines. Rhythms are halted before they even get a chance to go anywhere. You can find bits and pieces of previous music styles in their music, just like you can with Whitman. You can feel the iambic bounce for a while, but then it disappears. In the Minutemen, you can hear CCR or the Clash or jazz or Dick Dale at times, but then it disappears. Something new is born. Something unique when its hard to be unique using the same old tools. Scroll below and read “Take 5, D.” That’s a note written by their landlord. Now go read “#1 Hit Song.” I’ll take that over any classic rock love song any day. I’ll even take that over the university pappy crap poems.

I do believe I am beginning to ramble, so I will wrap up this 1:30 am delirious epiphany. Below are the lyrics to the original 4 Side double LP, SST release #028. I had help from Watt’s book, and some sites that had some of the lyrics (mostly done wrong), and a lot of it is my own transcription.
