Working. Finally. It’s not even a real job, but it is a job. Working for a “indie” music webstore (now owned by a major label, I shower numerous times a day) you’d think I’d be listening to music all the time finding out the latest and greatest artists. Not really. Most of the time I’m sitting by myself listening to Smodcast through my headphones, or on the occasion that I do throw on some music, it’s usually a decade or so old that I, for whatever reason, never wanted to listen to before. Like Phish. I feel like a fucking loser, 27 years old and listening to Phish for the first time. My 18 year old self wants to kick the shit out of me right now. But if we fought I doubt either of us would win, but it would be funny to watch. We’d somehow knock each other out or just give up.
Or I return to stuff that I used to listen to a lot like The Go-Betweens and MC Hawking.
The only decently new albums I’ve been listening to are The Monitor by Titus Andronicus, a couple of the Ducktails releases, and the BXI EP.
Ducktails make good background music. Sure you could pay closer attention but it’s the atmosphere that you feel from the music that really shines. It doesn’t want to be out front, it just wants to possess your day. No matter what you’re doing, where you are, Ducktails are following.
I’ve been listening to The Monitor, well all the time really. I’m waiting for the moment that the album becomes boring but it just hasn’t happened yet. Start to finish the album is phenomenal and easily a contender for album of the year.
Boris love to rock, and Ian Astbury, well he’s fucking Ian Astbury. This 4 song appetizer is enough to whet your appetite but will leave you wanting more so badly that you buy the plot of land next door to the kitchen, build a house, start a business, and raise a family there for the next 5 or 6 generations or until the universe collapses on itself. Which ever comes first.
Then again, what the hell do I know?
