I’ve been listening to a lot of hip hop recently as a whole bunch of new albums have been released and are being talked about more and more every day (Kanye write up coming soon, more Lil Wayne listens, getting back into the Roots, getting into CeeLo for the first time, and GirlTalk makes another GirlTalk album). Now this was released back in March, but I’m a little slow to the game. You remember how you felt the first time you heard De La Soul’s 3 Feet High And Rising? That’s how Shut Up, Dude hit me. Extremely funny and incredibly thought provoking at the same time, it’s an anomaly that has set out to prove what rap can and will be. Not really any gun talk except when they’re making fun of it, not any misogynistic talk except when the guys are reminiscing about being made fun of. You can call it parody rap or joke rap (if you must), call it what ever you like but don’t think they’re ephemeral. Just because they’re playful doesn’t mean you should let your guard down, they’re going to be around for a while and if they’re not at least we have a few mix tapes that we can take with us for a long time to come.
